A friend of mine just emailed me with fantastic news! She was made redundant with the whole department in her company and rather than compain about her bad luck, she decided to go to Guatemala as a volunteer for Choice Humanitaria:
"I got a volunteer job, for one year in Guatemala. I am leaving on July 9th.
I will work with Choice Humanitarian to reestablish a hospital in a remote valley of Alta Verapaz where 20,000 Maya people live. They are very poor, but look happy:-)
I will work with 10 local Choice Humanitarian employees. Nobody there speaks English, so this time, I will have to master Spanish. We will have other projects, eg. teaching Spanish to Maya people - first I will be a student in a straw made school, then, will work with Microsoft on new technologies that accelerate learning. I should also contribute to the business model for the local farming, including cardamon and pig farm:-)"
