#plasticfreejuly - CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

OK. I went to the local COOP (market) just to get a small snack. It's funny how you don't notice the world around until you really pay attention. Plastic is indeed everywhere.. and why? Have we gone totally mad?
In the end I bought a Fairtrade chocolate in a paper box and aluminium foil wrapping.

Guatemala story

A friend of mine just emailed me with fantastic news! She was made redundant with the whole department in her company and rather than compain about her bad luck, she decided to go to Guatemala as a volunteer for Choice Humanitaria:

"I got a volunteer job, for one year in Guatemala.  I am leaving on July 9th.

I will work with Choice Humanitarian to reestablish a hospital in a remote valley of Alta Verapaz where 20,000 Maya people live. They are very poor, but look happy:-)

I will work with 10 local Choice Humanitarian employees. Nobody there speaks English, so this time, I will have to master Spanish. We will have other projects, eg. teaching Spanish to Maya people - first I will be a student in a straw made school, then, will work with Microsoft on new technologies that accelerate learning. I should also contribute to the business model for the local farming, including cardamon and pig farm:-)"

Air quality...again

Google just informed me that my region observes declined air quality. After clicking the notification I got even more.
Luckily I've got two brains to process this.

One tells me "if even breathing is dangerous, then maximize the fun and die young. Cause you're not going to fix this".

The other one says "another piece of evidence, another push to do something. The first step is to acknowledge there is a problem and then group with like-minded people to take action."

In conclusion: take action and don't forget to have fun!

Sustainable Capitalism

Here's an interesting article from wired.co.uk about companies, which make money and promote social and environmental sustainability.

Afraid of heart attack? - Vote for reducing air pollution.

We know, even intuitively, that air pollution causes health issues. Who would have guessed that it actually causes people to die from a heart attack or a stroke.
